Milstead w Frinsted Newsletter December 2018.

A huge thank you to Sue for her patience and perseverance last night. Despite considerable difficulties, i.e. a lack of talent, my spinning top is actually spinning!! Hope you all had a laugh if not a working spinning top. Sue – you just don’t realise how talented you are!

It was very nice to see the two new ladies last night, Tracey who came last month and Jackie. We hope to see you both next month if not before. Our social evening next Friday is open to non-members and their friends too.

Next month our speaker will be from Swale Friends of the Earth. They will be talking about plastic waste, which has become so topical. We will be celebrating the Show the Love campaign at the meeting. If you were inspired by my paper seed ‘heart’ last night and would like to make something to show your love for the planet, bring it along next meeting. This coming Wednesday 17th the film group will meet at 8pm Faversham Cinema to watch Darkest Hour. This should be a brilliant film. If you are interested just let Barbara know on 01795 474620.

 

If you didn’t put your name on the list for the Social Evening on the 19^th January at 7pm can you let me know ASAP so I get the correct amount of shopping? This evening is open to all, so bring along friends and family for a fun evening. The cost is £7.50 each.

The first walk of the walking group will meet on Wednesday 24^th January 11.00 at the swimming pool car park. We will walk around Faversham them have a coffee after. Can you please let Donna know if you will be meeting us so we don’t leave without you? Her number is 07740 823327.

We are going to Sittingbourne Dogs on Friday 23^rd February, time to be announced. The evening will cost £26.95 for a three course meal, entrance and a race card. If you haven’t put your name down but want to go can you please let me or Marcelle know quickly as we will be paying the deposit next week. Husbands or a friend are invited too.

The Coffee morning at Frinsted takes place on Saturday 3^rd March 10.00-12.00. We are raising the money for New Leaf Domestic Abuse charity.  We will need cakes, books, bric a brac, plants, raffle prizes in fact anything that you think would sell. Please come along and support us on the day even if you can’t bring anything along.

If you haven’t paid your WI fees of £41, could you please either get the money to one of the committee or  send it to Dilys at 11 Shurland Avenue, Sittingbourne ME10 4QT.Cheques made payable to Milstead with Frinsted WI.

For the next two months we are collecting change for the Association of Country Women Worldwide. They are sponsoring 30 women to train as beekeepers which will enable them to become self-sufficient and look after their families. Please put whatever you can into the pot at the front table when you sign in.

The craft club will meet at Joyce’s House, (as Manor Cottage is now known!) on Wednesday 17^th 13.00-15.00. Please let Joyce know if you are attending. You can bring along something that you are working on or start something new. There are lots of ideas on the Women’s Institute website if you want some inspiration.

Our next lunch club will meet on Thursday 8^th March 13.00 at The Dove in Dargate. There will be lifts available for those who need one. More details to follow but here is an idea:  http://thedovedargate.co.uk/Lunch_Special.html

A big thanks to Donna for updating the MwF board. Each month she will print off the recipe of the month so please help yourself and take the time to look at the photos of our events and to put your name on the lists of events. We have a lot going on and it can get overwhelming at the meeting. If you are unsure about anything please contact me.

You will get your annual programme next month which will show you when you are hostess. Next month it will be Barbara, Alison and Diana.

If there are any events in the EK news that you would like to attend please contact Marcelle and she will book it for you.

Our best wishes go to the ladies who are under the weather at the moment, but especially thinking of Pauline and Iris. Get well soon.

Milstead w Frinsted Newsletter December 2017.

What a brilliant meeting last night. Mandy is such a great entertainer, she certainly can tell a story! Maybe we should go up and see her show?

Don’t forget it is the Tunstall Christmas tree festival this week until Sunday.

Milstead Church has its Christingle Service this Sunday at 5.30pm. Always a lovely service.

The resolutions have been announced for 2018. Your voting slip is in your WI Life magazine. Put your cross beside the one you think is the strongest resolution, cut it out and bring it to the January meeting. Don’t worry if you forget we will have spare voting slips at the meeting. The resolutions are:

1. Positive body image in a digital age
2. Stop FGM
3. Raising awareness of modern slavery
4. Mental health matters
5. Healthy mouth healthier body

At our February meeting we will have a speaker from Swale Friends of the Earth to tie in with the Show the Love campaign. We will be making something to show that we care for the planet, as we did last year with the heart brooches. If anybody has any good ideas for next year, something that we can all do, can you let me know please? I do have a couple of ideas. It should be a good meeting.

Thank you for all the food you brought along last night. I will take it along to the foodbank next week.

It’s not too late to add your name to the Christmas Wreath workshop on Tuesday 12^th December 2-4pm. If you want to join us can you let me know? It costs £25 which will include all materials and cake and mulled wine!

Please note that the January meeting will take place on the second Thursday on the 11^th. Sue will be demonstrating quilling and it will be a hands on meeting. Can you please bring along your own scissors if you have them?

I know you all want to join me in wishing Iris, Diana and John all of our love and a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with you all especially at this time of year.

Milstead w Frinsted Newsletter November 2017.

Thanks for your vote of support, it was much appreciated (or was it just that nobody else wanted to do it!) I will do my very best this year to make it an interesting and fun year for you all.

BCL has sold for £372,000 at auction this week and the Trustees have a month to move to the new premises.

The resolutions have been announced for 2018. You will have the opportunity to vote for your choice early next year and then we will have our Resolution meeting in May to decide whether we are in favour of the chosen resolution. They are:

1. Positive body image in a digital age
2. Stop FGM
3. Raising awareness of modern slavery
4. Mental health matters
5. Healthy mouth healthier body

All interesting I am sure you will agree.

Craft club starts up again next week on the 8^th at 1.30pm. If your name is down but you can’t make it please let Sue or Joyce know.

Our 95^th Birthday party on the 16^th November 7pm at The Blacksmiths Arms. If you haven’t put your name down yet can you please let us know ASAP? It should be a brilliant evening – with no washing up!! If you need a lift please be at Milstead VH at 6.30.

The Not in My Name meeting at Rodmersham Café is on Friday 24^th at 4pm; please bring some toiletries for the local refuge and some money to buy your tea and cake.

At present I have 8 names for the Christmas Wreath workshop on Tuesday 12^th December 2-4pm. If you want to join us can you let me know? It costs £25 which will include all materials and cake and mulled wine!!

The Christmas meal this year is at the Carpenter’s Arms, Eastling at 1pm Saturday 9^{th December}. I will send out the menu to those ladies who haven’t chosen their menu following this, if you could let me have your choices so I can pay our deposit and secure the table.

The Social Evening on the 19^th January 7pm has been changed to sausage and mash and bingo, just for a change. Hope this suits everybody. This evening is open to all, so bring along friends and family for a fun evening. Just let us know or put your numbers down on the list next month.

Our 7th December meeting should be great fun with Mandy Winters – the yodelling cowgirl! Yes that is correct! If you want to dress Christmassy that would be great. I’m sure Mandy will dress to impress.

OCTOBER (BELATED) 2017 Newsletter

 

Sorry to hear that we missed such a fun meeting! Well done Sue and Jenny for making the best of it. We are all looking forward to hearing more from Jenny.

A few of our ladies went to the Borden meeting last week and saw another of Barbara Stephens very animated talks and the following day we saw Helen Kendal-Tobias talking about diamonds, a very interesting talk. Do come along with us to these meetings at the other WI’s in our Group. It is always good to meet other ladies and see how other WI’s operate. You may be surprised how many people you know.

Craft Club will resume on November 8^th 1.30-3.30 at Joyce’s house. We will continue with the Twiddle Cushions and also be making some White Ribbons for the Not in My Name day. If you would like to attend and your name is not on the list just let myself or Marcelle know.

This year our Birthday Party is going to be held in The Blacksmith’s Arms, Wormshill Thursday 16^th November starting at 7pm. There will be a hot buffet, entertainment by Ruth Minhall and a drink on arrival for just £15. You do not have to worry if you can’t get there as we will be providing lifts from Milstead VH as we did at the Garden Party. If you haven’t put your name on the list please let me or Denise know. I know this will be a lovely evening.

Another National event that we have decided to add our support to is the Not in my Name (White Ribbon) Campaign. This is an initiative that asks men to denounce Domestic Abuse against women; a white ribbon is the symbol that shows support for the campaign. We have managed to attract two brilliant speakers for our event on Friday 24^th November 4pm at Rodmersham Coffee Shop. Cllr Alan Horton is the Cabinet lead for Safer Communities and Andy Rabey is the White Ribbon Ambassador for Swale Action to end Domestic Abuse (SAEDA). Neither has done this before and is delighted to be asked. They will be able to tell us what their roles involve, what help is available and how they aim to reduce incidence of domestic abuse against women in Swale. We are able to accommodate 25 ladies, so if you are interested please let Marcelle know quickly as we have had a good interest already. I hope that this will be a really informative afternoon and again something we can build upon in the future. There will be tea and cake available to buy as well!!

Our Christmas meal will be December 9^th 1pm at The Carpenter’s Arms in Eastling. Please add your name to the list or just let myself or Marcelle know.

We are having a social evening on January 19^{th 2018} at the VH with Bingo and fish and chips. Please support us at this fund raising evening and put your name on the list. This is open to non-members, family and friends.

Next year the East Kent Annual Meeting will be held at Folkestone on 28^th March. The day starts at 10.30 till 3.30. This year the speakers are Sherrie Hewson (from Benidorm, Loose Women) and an Orthopaedic Surgeon talking about knee replacement surgery. The cost is £12. This is always a very interesting and entertaining day. If you would like to come please let myself or Marcelle know. There is usually a coach available but we always drive ourselves there and share the petrol and parking.

There are several interesting events listed in the EK news which we can attend. If you want to go to something but don’t fancy going on your own just let me know and I am sure there will be somebody else that will go with you.

Lynne and I went to Denman College last week and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It was my first time there and we have already booked for next year. Please take a look online or at the brochure. You will be amazed at the huge range of courses on offer.

I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting on 2^nd November as this is our annual meeting where we vote for the committee that will organise another fun packed, interesting year for you. Our speaker will be Paula Trower talking of her work in Lebanon with Syrian refugee children (hopefully)!

SEPTEMBER 2017 Newsletter

 

It was lovely to see two new faces last night. We hope that you felt welcome and that you enjoyed the interesting speakers and will join us next month.

I know you all join me in wishing Teresa all our love as she progresses with her treatment for breast cancer. Our thoughts are also with Lynne following the death of her father Roy, who many of you knew.

Well done to our Quiz team who came fourth this week at Tunstall.

For those of you that weren’t able to attend last night, Milstead W Frinsted won Best of Show for their entry in the Horticultural Society Annual Show. My huge thanks go to Joyce, Sue and Mandy for their hard work. I think that it looked amazing. Now we have a lot to live up to next year!

 

 

Upcoming events:

Sports Day will be this Tuesday 12th at 1.00 till 3.00 at the Village Hall. We will have Pilates with Dee Matthews and Medau with Jane Seyler. Both classes are free and the instructors will bring all the equipment needed. I hope to see lots of you, again if your name is not on the list can you please let me know for numbers. This is a National Event which Milstead w Frinsted are proud to be a part of.

Thursday 21^st September twelve of us will meet at 5.45 outside the cinema at Dockside for our tour of the Copper Rivet at Chatham Dockyard. We will eat after the tour at Zippers. If you haven’t paid please bring your money on the night.

The Bredgar Group’s October meeting takes place on October 11^th at 2.30. Helen Kendall-Tobias will entertain with Diamonds are a Girl’s best Friend! At present I have Linda, Marcelle and myself. It would be lovely if a few more could come and support the Group.

Lynsted w Teynham WI are holding a quiz night on the 14th October 6.45 for 7.15. If you are interested in forming a table of 6 please let myself or Marcelle know. The cost is just £7 per person which includes fish and chips .The event is being held at the Community Hall in Teynham.

Friday 27^th October is the date for our fund-raising Race Night. We will start at 7pm and there will be a fish and chip supper. We think the cost will be £10 (still to be confirmed) for a fun night out. This is a new idea to replace our usual Beetle Drive. Please put your name on the list next month or let Marcelle or myself know.

I do hope that everybody enjoyed the unusual meeting last night! What a funny evening – it wasn’t far off the play some of us saw the night before at the Marlowe ‘the play that went wrong’. I think the lost stranger who arrived with the late speaker was hilarious! Alison was worth the wait – what a quirky hobby but how interesting!

Next month our speaker will be The History of the Medway Queen Paddle Steamer. We have decided to make it an Open Meeting; you can invite your other halves, friends or family. It’s a chance for them to see what we do!!

We hope that you liked the new way of presenting the Programme Planning. Mandy has already booked some brilliant speakers but if you have somebody that you would love to hear or hear again just let her know and she will do her best to book them for the coming year or even the following.  It sounds like another year of superb speakers and great entertainment.

 

Upcoming events:

Wormshill have their Pop up Café on the first Tuesday of each month at their village hall between 10 and 12.

Milstead are holding their Annual Flower Show on Saturday 19^th August 14.30-16.30. Please come along and support the show and our ladies who will be working hard on our entry. It’s a really lovely show and worth a look! The theme this year for our entry is ‘what your WI means to you’. For me its meeting such lovely ladies!

The Craft Club will resume in October, date will be emailed out nearer the time. We will continue with the Twiddle Cushions, then start on Christmas Crafts and some White Ribbons.

We have decided to support the National Sports Week held during the week commencing 11^th September. The Village Hall has been booked for Tuesday 12^th September from 1pm. Dee from Hempstead House will be coming along to provide a beginner Pilate’s class followed by Jane Seyler with a Medau class. This is a free event for members and is just a bit of fun. IF your name isn’t on the list please let Marcelle or I know ASAP. We hope that this is something we can build upon next year, maybe trying some more unusual sports!! Who knows we could have The Milstead fencers or Wing walkers next year!

The first of our new trips will be to the Copper Rivet at Chatham Dockyard on Thursday 21^st September 6pm. This will be a tour of the Gin Distillery. Check it out at https://www.copperrivetdistillery.com/. The tour costs £12 with an optional meal afterwards. This should be a brilliant outing, lifts can be arranged. Please let Dilys know if you would like to be added to the list.

We have managed to attract two brilliant speakers for our event on Friday 24^th November 4pm at Rodmersham Coffee Shop. Cllr Alan Horton is the Cabinet lead for Safer Communities and Andy Rabey is the White Ribbon Ambassador for Swale Action to end Domestic Abuse (SAEDA). Neither has done this before and is delighted to be asked. They will be able to tell us what their roles involve, what help is available and how they aim to reduce incidence of domestic abuse against women in Swale. We are able to accommodate 25 ladies, so if you are interested please let Marcelle know quickly as we have had a good interest already. I hope that this will be a really informative afternoon and again something we can build upon in the future. Also there will be tea and cake available!

Our Christmas meal will be December 9^th 1pm, the venue will follow but at least you can get the date in your diaries to avoid double booking.

I hope that you agree there are plenty of interesting events coming up. We are working hard to provide a variety of ideas for you; hopefully there is something for everybody. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.

july 2017 Newsletter!

 

I hope that those of you who were able to attend our Garden Party last night enjoyed yourselves. The weather couldn’t have been better and the location looked really lovely. Thanks to the committee for all their work to make it so seamless.  I have good news for everyone worried about my dress – the damage hardly notices, well done to whoever it was with the scissors!! I felt such a twit! The hat game was brilliant fun, even though there was some serious cheating going on! It was a perfect evening!

On a sadder note both Dilys and Elaine Sydenham lost their mums this month and I know that you all join me in sending all of our love to them both at this sad and difficult time.

We also send Iris all our love as she continues to recover from her accident. Hopefully, if she’s not home already it won’t be long. Get Better soon Iris xx

The craft club will meet this month on the 11^th  at Joyce’s house as usual, 1-3pm. Bring along any buttons, zips and things that would look and feel lovely sewn onto the fiddle cushions. The cushion that Valerie and Joyce showed us last night look brilliant. If you want to come along, even on an informal basis please come along and join the ladies.

The visit to Goodnestone Park on the 27^th July has been postponed as only three of us were able to make it. Summer is always a tricky time with outings as you are all such a busy lot! If you have any ideas for trips out please let Dilys or I know.

Wormshill have started to hold a Pop up Café on the first Tuesday of the month at their village hall between 10 and 12. The first one this month was good fun. Do go along and support them.

Milstead are holding their Annual Flower Show on Saturday 19^th August 14.30-16.30. We are looking for volunteers for our entry; it comprises a floral display, craft item and a cake. If you can help we would be very grateful. Contact me or Marcelle if you are interested. But even if you can’t help with the exhibit please do come along and support the event.

Date of our next meeting is the 3rd August, this is our programme planning meeting. It will be a relaxed meeting with plenty of time to socialise. Look forward to seeing you all there.

june 2017 Newsletter!

 

We had a very quiet meeting this month which makes a change from of late!

The speaker was not very confident and was quite scared; however the jewellery that she had made was very nice. She sells out of the Creek Creative in Faversham and does lovely bespoke pieces in silver if you want anything special made.

Next month, July 6^th, is our Summer Garden Party; hopefully we have all the names of those who are attending. This year there is no need for you to bring food as we are doing something a little different. We will meet at the Village Hall Milstead at 6.30 and car share to the hall at Frinsted. Don’t forget to bring a hat for a game, nothing too special in case it gets damaged!

The Horticultural Society has an event this Friday at 7pm, Italy seed to plate which should be very good, you do not need to be a member to attend. It is just £7.50 for non-members which includes food!

The craft club will meet this month on the 20^th at Joyce’s house as usual, 1-3pm. Bring along any buttons, zips and things that would look and feel lovely sewn onto the fiddle cushions.

Our lunch club will be meeting at the Woodstock on Wednesday 21^st June, if you would like to go just let Dilys know and choose your menu so she can pre-order. I hear the food there is very good!

The visit to Goodnestone Park on the 27^th July promises to be a really lovely day out. It costs just £7. Do not worry if you cannot drive there yourself as we can always arrange a lift for you.

Looking forward to the Garden Party and praying for a nice hot sunny evening, but if we aren’t blessed with sunshine we can use the hall, so do not worry!

Belated MAy 2017 Newsletter!

 

Sorry this is so late this month, busy busy month. Due to the lateness I will simply list the dates necessary for your hectic diaries.

We had a brilliant packed meeting, the speaker from Kent, Sussex, Surrey Air Ambulance certainly made me think! followed by our Resolution Debate. We decided to back the Plastic Soup Resolution but felt that Alleviating Loneliness was a local issue and therefore rejected the National Resolution. This seems to be in line with other WI’s.

I hope you all agreed that Claire and Pal were brilliant speakers. I was absolutely amazed at how accurate the dogs are and the research sounds incredible, the scope for the dogs seems limitless, Malaria detector dogs could change things in Africa!

It was wonderful to see so many ladies again. The meeting was full of energy, please let me have your feedback at the Linger Longer idea (where we do not have to rush off at 9.30pm if it has been a busy meeting and we are still chatting)!

The Craft Club will meet again this Tuesday 11^th 1pm at Joyce’s house. They will be making Christmas embroidered hearts. There will also be a lady talking about quilting. Don’t forget your scissors and materials.

We have a spare ticket for the resolution meeting at Chartham on the 24^th April. If you haven’t been before it is a really interesting informative meeting discussing the resolutions that have been put forward this year. Next month we will be discussing which way we want to vote at the AGM. IF you have any knowledge of the two subjects, Alleviating loneliness and Plastic soup, we want to hear from you!

We are going to the Dirty Habit for lunch and a walk on Thursday 27^th April. If your name isn’t on the list just let Dilys or myself know.

There will be a Horticultural Society plant sale on Saturday 29^th at the village hall from 10-12. You can buy all your summer bedding and much more here.

We will be making small posies in support of the Lonely Bouquet Day on 5^th May. It is just a small posy which we will distribute to ladies in Milstead to show that people are thinking of them. If a few of us made a couple we would be able to give out lots of posies. If you are busy and cannot make a fresh posy an artificial one would be fantastic. We will meet on the Friday to deliver the flowers. Please let me know if you can support us.

Dilys is also organising a trip to Goodnestone Park Gardens on either the 17^th or 18^th May. Again if your name isn’t on the list just let either of us know.  www.goodnestoneparkgardens.co.uk

There is a Coffee morning on Saturday 20^th May from 10.00- 13.00 at the Village Hall Milstead. We will need cakes for the cake stall. Please support us!

Our Garden Party will take place at Frinsted Village Hall this year, July 6^th starting at 7pm. You do not need to make food this year as we will be providing picnic boxes and Pimms. To avoid too many cars at Frinsted we shall meet at the village hall in Milstead at 6.30pm and car share to Frinsted. We ask that you bring a hat for a game; please don’t bring your best Ascot type hat as it may get spoilt!
