MARCH 2019.

 

What a lovely evening again. The ‘mudwrestlers’ were so interesting!!! Sad how much mental health is a big part of their work. Something that hadn’t occurred to me! Very brave men, what would this country be without volunteers!

Once again so nice to see so many new visitors, we must be doing something right!  I know you will make them really welcome.

Another huge thank you to Jackie for the gorgeous pennant to represent MwF on the East Kent Centenary bunting. A deserved winner of Woman of the Month!

We send out a newsletter as on the night all the dates and events get a bit confusing. If you are interested in finding out about any of the events just call me on 07729828959.

Here are the upcoming events:

Tonight is the Annual meeting of the Horticultural Society. IF you aren’t a member it is just £3.50 per person to join and they organise great events and trips. This year they are going to Wisley on 21^st July. Please come along and see what they do, you don’t need to be a brilliant gardener! Further details from Jenny Harper.

Our Craft Club will meet next Wednesday at Joyce’s house. They will be making Iris folded Easter cards. They meet 1pm-3.30pm. Please feel free to come along and see what they are doing. You do not need to be ‘crafty’ as Sue and Lynne will show everybody what to do.

Jo Arnell from Hornbrook Manor has a pruning workshop on Saturday 16^th March. It is from 10-12.30 and costs just £20. If you would like to go please let me know. Her workshops are really fun and she is very knowledgeable. If you want more details just call me.

We are serving Soup and Sandwich lunch in our Village hall on Tuesday 19^th March at 1pm for just £3. The idea is to invite neighbours and friends within the villages as winter can be long and dreary. Please can you let anyone on the committee know if you are coming and how many guests you are bringing with you? All are welcome.

We are visiting the Criterion at Bluetown on Wednesday 20^th March 2pm to see Rodgers and Hammerstein. The cost is 25 pounds which includes an afternoon tea. Please let me know ASAP if you want to join us, we can always arrange a life if needed. At present there are four ladies going Barbara, Lynne, Valerie and me but there is room for more.

Our annual Quiz Night will take place on Friday 29^th March 2019 at 7.30pm. This is a great night at just £7.50 a head which includes a great supper. Friends and family are all welcome, you do not need a table or team as you can join a table. If you have not been before it really is great fun!

 

We are going to the George Newnham on Sunday 7^th April for lunch, husbands or friends are welcome. We will meet there for 1pm. If your name isn’t on the list just let me know.

There is a spring gardening day at the Canterbury Academy on April 10^th with some interesting speakers. I am going if anybody wants to come with me. It is 10.15-3.30 and £12.

Painters Forstal w Selling WI have invited us to their birthday party on Tuesday April 16^th 2pm. This takes place at Eastling VH. Please let Marcelle know if you would like to go.

East Kent Federation is arranging a trip to Eltham Palace on Wednesday 8^th May. The price will be £18 for members of English Heritage and £32 for others. If you want to join us please let Marcelle know. These trips are always well organised and fun. The coach pick up will be from Sittingbourne station.

On 11^th June 2pm we are planning to take a river trip in Canterbury, please let us know if you are interested.

We are visiting Provender House on Tuesday 2^nd July at 2.30pm for a guided tour with tea and cake (optional). The price is £11 for concessions with £6.50 for tea and cake. I will collect the money in May.

Our Annual Garden Party will take place on Thursday July 4^th in Janice’s garden. We will have a great entertainer and a BBQ. Husbands are invited too. Please put the date in your diaries and pray for sunshine!!

The Bredgar Group of WI’s are celebrating East Kent’s Centenary on July 11^th at Upchurch Golf Club. The cost is £26 for three courses. Please note the change of date if you have put your name down. We need a £5 deposit at the April meeting.

There is a Garden Party to celebrate East Kent’s Centenary on Monday July 22^nd at St Edmunds School, Canterbury. Please let Marcelle know if you want to attend. There are two sittings and the cost is £15 .I believe that Vena will be demonstrating Tai-Chi at the party and there are lots of things going on.

I have enquired at Shepherd Neame about the cost of a tour and dinner on October 9^th at 11.45. Before I book I need to see who is interested and if I can drum up interest elsewhere to make the numbers up. Please let me know if you fancy it.

I am also enquiring to see who would be interested in a Christmas Party night at the Great Danes (it’s called Christmas Beatles) 2/3/4/5^th December £30 for a 3 course meal. We would need to book early.

The Art Course is provisionally booked for 6 people on Monday 10^th, 17^th and 24^th June 7-9pm. Helen Neaves assures me that by the end of the third week you will all be able to draw! Can you let me know ASAP if you are interested as numbers need to be kept to 6?

We will be distributing small posies in May to show that we care about people, the idea started a few years ago and it ties in with the Alleviating Loneliness resolution which is at the heart of the WI. I need flowers and people to make the posies plus an idea of where we could deliver them! I will make the arrangements.   Volunteers please!

The Coffee mornings have recommenced at Frinsted on the first Saturday in the month. We will be raising money for the Freedom Project on Saturday July 6^th 10.30-12.00. This is a charity which fosters dogs when a family need to go to a domestic violence refuge. We will need cakes, brick a brac, tombola prizes, and people to help us again.

East Kent Federation have organised a lunch where the proposed resolution is discussed at length. This is to help members decide which way they will vote. We will be informed of the chosen resolution for 2019 very soon. I will be attending with Marcelle and Jean. This takes place at Chartham village hall on Monday 15^th April 10.00. If you want to come along please let us know, lifts can be arranged. The cost is £7.50 which includes a very nice lunch.

Next month’s meeting will be fun – we have Mary Smith ‘a schoolgirls war’ then the Maypole Minstral singers. The other groups from our Bredgar Group are invited so it will be a great evening.  The committee will be providing food but if you want to make something it would be very welcome – just let me know so I can work out the necessary food. Look forward to seeing you all there. It’s a chance to show the other WI’s just how wonderful our WI is!!!

February 2019.

 

I thought that that was another fabulous evening. Emily was like a lovely breath of fresh air and I will be taking her up on her very kind offer to immortalise us all in paint nearer to our centenary! Well done to the ladies who made a green heart – the completed post cards have been sent to your MP.

Lovely to see two new visitors and hope that Sam and Claire enjoyed themselves and join us again.

It may seem like we have a lot of events and lists going around but we are trying to give you all plenty of notice so that you can put the dates in your full diaries. We thought the more notice the better.

With that in mind here are the upcoming events in date order:

Tunstall have invited Helen Whately MP to their meeting on Thursday 14^th 7.45. If you want to attend please let Marcelle know ASAP.

Bapchild have invited us to their birthday party on Thursday 21^st February 2.30pm, names to Marcelle please.

I hope you all had a fabulous time on Thursday. I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I am so sorry that some of you aren’t feeling well and missed the meeting; we all hope that you soon get well.

Welcome to our new visitor Vena.

Thank you all for choosing your resolution. I am not sure personally which was the most relevant or achievable but the votes will all go to national and then we can decide on the chosen one in May.

Thank you to the Craft Club for agreeing to make a pennant for the East Kent Centenary bunting. We look forward to seeing something gorgeous!

We are going to visit the newly opened Red Lion, Milstead on Sunday 10^th March 1pm. This is open to husbands, friends etc. all we need is numbers and a deposit next month. We want to support the new landlord. Names to Marcelle please.

Next month’s talk will be ‘Show the love for Art’ Emily Cooper which ties in with the National WI day for Show the love for the planet. The WI was a founding member of the Climate Coalition, the UK’s largest group dedicated to action on climate change and never has this been more relevant. There will be a postcard in your next WI life magazine which is heart which shows what you care about   and bring it to the meeting we can display them. It doesn’t have to be complicated, a photo of something you love in a great heart frame! Anything.

december 2018.

 

What a brilliant meeting this week, sorry that some of you weren’t well enough or otherwise busy, but it was a great atmosphere. Helped no doubt by the Prosecco. Huge thanks to Mandy and Sue for the fabulous food too.  Followed by the Christmas meal yesterday, we have had a great week. Kevin at the Plough said we are the nicest group he has, probably why he gave us the yummy blackberry vodkas!!

I just went to see the Tunstall Christmas Tree Festival. It gives me great hope to see such creativity and generosity of time and effort. People are still engaged and passionate about our lovely part of Kent.  Well done Mandy and the girls who helped her. Our tree was beautifully elegant.

New Leaf Support was hugely grateful for the generous donation of food and she was taking it to two ladies that have just moved in. They are such a great Charity and she appreciates our support. Thank you girls.

Seven of us are off to Hornbrook Manor to make our wreaths on Wednesday. I am sure there will be photos !

The membership fees are due in January, if you didn’t pay this month you can send a cheque made payable to Milstead with Frinsted WI for £42 to 11 Shurland Avenue, Sittingbourne, ME10 4QT. Dilys needs to get the membership sorted out before she goes on holiday, so if you can pay her asap that will really help.

Teresa Clark and Lindsey Kite will not be renewing their membership this year as they both have a lot of other things that they are involved in. We have loved having you and wish you all the best. You would be warmly welcomed back if you ever find the time.

The January meeting takes place on the second Thursday, the 10^th. We will be playing a fun game of bingo with a fish and chip supper. If you have not put your name on the list can you please do it ASAP so I can order?  The cost is £5. If you do not want to eat that is absolutely fine too.

Next year our Group of WI’s are planning a Centenary lunch on July 16^th. I know it is a long way off but the Presidents group need an idea of numbers. It will probably be at Upchurch Golf Club.

Can you please look at the Resolutions that are suggested on P24 in your WI life and decide which one you believe that the WI can achieve the most with? This is a really important part of the WI and I will represent you at the AGM in June to vote on the selected resolution.

Lastly if you are interested in seeing Brendan Cole at the Marlowe on Thursday 21^st March £37 please let me know so I can book.

November 2018.

 

I hope that you all enjoyed the Annual Meeting. It was so nice to have time to sit and chat.

The hats were brilliant – well done to those of you that took part, it was just a bit of fun but also a way of encouraging us to pop into the Charity shops and donate some money. A few of the hats were incredible value for money and I am sure they will make another appearance at a wedding or ladies day in the future (maybe not the winner hat though).

A huge thank you to both Dilys and Marcelle for their reports, both of which are being submitted to East Kent.

Your new committee is a bit smaller this year – Marcelle remains as Secretary, Dilys remains as Treasurer, Donna, Di, Jenny, Lynne, and me. We are already planning a great year for you next year but if you have any places that you would like us to visit or ideas please let me know. We try hard to please and are always open to suggestion.

Thank you so much for all the toiletries you brought in for New Leaf Domestic Abuse charity. I have spoken to them today and will be dropping the stuff off as soon as I am passing. They are really grateful. You always come up troops!

We are visiting the cinema at Faversham on Monday to see They Shall not Grow Old at 7.45pm. Please let Barbara know if you want to join us.

Our Birthday Party is on Thursday 15^th November in the village hall at 7 for 7.30pm. If your name isn’t on the list please contact Marcelle ASAP. This will be a really nice, fun evening with good food and entertainment.

So far I have Dilys, Di, Lynne, Donna, Kate Joy, Karen and me. It’s not too late to put your name down!

Milstead w Frinsted are presenting a poppy wreath at the Remembrance Service at Milstead Church this year on Sunday 11^th at 3pm. If you would like to join us please let Joyce or myself know.

The Horticultural Society has a quiz on Friday16th November at 7pm, just £7 for a great evening. If you want to form a table or join a table please let Jenny Harper know.

The Milstead Christmas Bazaar takes place on Saturday 24^th 10.00-12.00. All profit goes to the Church, it’s a good social morning and you will be able to pick up some nice bits before Christmas. Could you please donate cakes?

The December meeting will be a good evening, I’ve seen the speaker Paolo Arigo from Franchi Seeds before. So please join us on December 6^th. Don’t forget if you know anybody that you think would enjoy the WI please invite them along – this could be a good one to entice them to join!

I just can’t believe I am doing the October newsletter, where did that year go again!

I hope the ones of you that managed to get to the meeting enjoyed Dick Bolton’s really knowledgeable presentation on the Stained Glass Windows of Kent. It was very interesting – something that you don’t always think of when you enter a church or Cathedral. It was very kind of him to step in at the last moment.

The Wine Tasting fund raising evening was a brilliant evening which raised 321.82 (my pound button isn’t working on my laptop!) if you didn’t join us this year make sure you put your names down next time we do it. A huge thanks once again to Denise and Mike.

Our Birthday Party is almost upon us. The committee have agreed to make hot food again as this seems popular but we are asking the members for a desert or a bottle of drink. If your name isn’t down can you let Marcelle know ASAP. We need definite numbers to cater for. The date for our party is Thursday 15^th November at 7.30. For our newer ladies this is something that all WI’s do to celebrate the date the WI was formed and we invite other WI’s to come and celebrate with us.

Next month’s meeting on Thursday 1^st November is our AGM. We won’t be having tellers or voting as we have less than 8 nominations but your officers will be giving their reports. Please join in with the Charity Shop Hat Challenge. All you need to do is buy any hat from a charity shop for 5 pounds or less!

The craft club will meet at Joyce’s this Wednesday the 10th at 1pm. If you are going please let Joyce know for numbers.

There are speaker auditions taking place at Bobbing tomorrow if you are interested.

Borden has their birthday party on Tuesday October 9^th at 2.15pm. If you would like to join us please let Marcelle know.

The Bredgar Group of WI’s have their Group Meeting on Wednesday 10^th at Bredgar 7.15pm.

On Tuesday 16^th October we are visiting the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. We will travel from Sittingbourne to Stratford meeting at Sittingbourne station at 9.15.

This year’s Christmas Lunch will take place on Saturday 8^th December at the Plough, Lewson Street 1pm. If you name isn’t on the list please contact Marcelle and please bring along the £5 deposit next month. I am sure Kevin will look after us and it will be a fun meal.

We are visiting Jo Arnell’s lovely workshop to make our Christmas Wreaths on Wednesday 12^th December. This will be a gorgeous day; we will be organising cars so we travel in as few as possible. It is 25 pounds which includes everything including mulled wine and cake! Please let me know ASAP if you would like to join us so I can give Jo final numbers.

The membership fees are due in January, next month Dilys will be bringing in envelopes for your fees, if you could bring in post-dated cheques this will help her enormously. They can be dated 1^st January 2019 if you like. Obviously cash is good too. The fees are 42 pounds this year.

We are collecting toiletries again this year for the domestic abuse charity New Leaf. Please be generous and bring your toiletries in for the November meeting.

At the December meeting we will collect food to take to the Food Bank again. It is so important to remember that not everyone is as excited about the pending celebrations as we are. I hope you all agree that this is an important part of the W.I. I know you will all be super supportive.

Milstead w Frinsted are presenting a poppy wreath at the Remembrance Service at Milstead Church this year. IF you would like to join us please let Joyce or myself know.

Well I don’t know about you but I thought that was one of the most interesting talks we’ve had. It’s good to know our safety at airports is in such good hands!

Another huge congratulation to our first Woman of the Month – Donna. For those of you that weren’t at the meeting, Donna has been going to Faversham pool every Saturday morning to learn how to dive!!!!!!!! Watch out Tom Daly. What an amazing achievement. We look forward to a demonstration Donna!

The craft club will meet at Joyce’s tomorrow at 1pm. If you are going please let Joyce know for numbers. They will be starting on the gorgeous rag garlands.

Please come along to the Village Hall on Saturday 18^th August at 2.30 to see the amazing entries in the Horticultural Society Annual Show or even see Jenny for the entry form and submit something yourself!

The lunch club are meeting at Oad Street on Thursday 20^th August. Please let Marcelle know ASAP if you are joining us.

East Kent Federation are organising a trip to the Globe Theatre on September 10^th. They have arranged coach pick-ups from Sittingbourne station and the total cost is £30. There are three of us going. Would anybody else like to join us? This will be a lovely trip. If you would like to go please let Marcelle know as soon as you can.

Put your name down on the list for the Sports Week or let myself or Marcelle know. We will be doing Line Dancing on Thursday 20^th  September at 2pm in the Village Hall and there will be a nice walk on Tuesday 18^th, please let Donna know if you want to participate in the walk (more details to follow). This is a National Initiative to encourage women to take part in different sports, please come and join in as the more the better!

On September 21^st we are having a wine tasting evening. It will be £10 a head and is of course open to anyone. It is a fundraising event so please support us.

On Tuesday 16^th October we are visiting the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. We will travel from Sittingbourne to Stratford by train. We are having a walking tour which lasts around an hour and will cost £8/£6, then a boat tour £9/£8. For those wanting to go up the Arcelor Mittal Orbit tower the cost is £11.50/8.50. You can also come down via the slide! We will have lunch at Westfield’s shopping centre afterwards. This will be a really interesting day. Please let Marcelle know if you are joining us.

Our Christmas Lunch will take place on Saturday 8^th December at the Plough, Lewson Street 1pm. There will be a list next month.

Next month’s meeting on Thursday 6^th September will inform us about Wills and Power of Attorneys. A very important issue.

So nice to see so many of you on Thursday. All of our best wishes go to Iris and Elaine B who are very under the weather at the moment. Get well soon.

Congratulations again to Jenny for being simply amazing. She was our Woman of the Month for September. She not only organised the Horticultural Annual Show but also had entries in so many categories and at the very last minute made the most beautiful cake for the WI entry as yours truly couldn’t do it! Thanks Jenny between you, Joyce and Marcelle we not only beat the other two WI entries but picked up best in show as well.

At the November meeting you have a chance to make a difference by joining the committee. If this is something you would like to do just let Marcelle or I know. Next month you will be asked to nominate 8 people for the committee members. They will then be asked if they want to stand for election. If they do, you all get to vote for 8 ladies at the November meeting. Can’t believe another year has passed!

The craft club will meet at Joyce’s this Wednesday the 12^th at 1pm. If you are going please let Joyce know for numbers.

Next week is the start of Sports Week. We have a walk around Moat Park on Tuesday the 18^th at 2pm and Line Dancing on Thursday 20^{th September} at 2pm in the Village Hall. If you want to join in please let Marcelle know. It is only for fun and the more of us that take part the more fun we all have.

We are really looking forward to our September fundraiser on Friday 21^st 7pm for 7.30pm.

Borden has their birthday party on Tuesday October 9^th at 2.15pm. If you would like to join us please let Marcelle know.

It was lovely to see so many at this month’s meeting. I hope you enjoyed the speaker. What a different way of life now in our villages !

As I mentioned upon on Thursday I attended the AGM at Cardiff and will try to put together something cohesive when I can find my notes! It was a brilliant meeting with superb speakers. The Mental Health Resolution was passed with a 98% majority.

A huge thank you to the ladies that made floral posies for Dilys, Julie and I to distribute at Age UK in Sittingbourne. They were absolutely delighted and surprised to receive them. Some gentlemen took one as well. We also managed to give one to each member of staff.  For such a small effort and expense we made 50 people very happy.

At present we have 11 visiting Tram Hatch gardens near Ashford on Saturday 23^rd June at 12.00. If you would like to join us just let me know.  These gardens are really beautiful and Pam is going to make us a ploughman’s lunch.

The Walking Group are meeting at Riverside County Park, Rainham on Friday 29^th June at 1pm. Dogs are welcome too.

Thank you to the ladies who have volunteered to help at the Coffee Morning at Frinsted on the 7^th July. If you can arrive around 10.00 to help prepare that would be wonderful. We need as many cakes as you can all make please. If you can’t make it to Frinsted you can leave them with us at the Garden Party meeting. We also need raffle prizes, plants for sale and tombola prizes. If you haven’t been before this is a very nice coffee morning with all the proceeds going to a Charity we have chosen – New Leaf Support.
