Hello Ladies

Happy New Year

I hope that those who could make it enjoyed the meeting last week. I was so pleased to hear about a local business promoting everything we have locally. I hadn’t realized they had a shop in Dargate too. It was lovely to see so many of you and great to visit another new lady, Carrie.

Thank you all for testing and sticking to the covid rules. Lots of other WI’s have made the decision not to restart after Christmas. I really do not want to do this and if we are all vigilant , stick to the rules , try not to move about too much at the meetings and let me know immediately if we experience any symptoms we can keep Milstead w Frinsted open!

I know a few of you cannot attend for work/personal reasons and I fully respect this. I wish we could offer hybrid meetings with zoom for those ladies but I am afraid we do not have WIFI at the village hall. We hope to be able to welcome you back soon.

The February meeting is on the 3rd. Janet and Claire from Fancy Tat will be demonstrating reusing items to make new things. This fits in with the environmental theme for our February meeting. Members all over the country will be making green hearts to symbolize love for the planet , there will be ideas in your WI magazine and on the WI website. Basically it is anything from a biscuit to fridge magnet that symbolizes our love for nature and our planet. We could plant something out in our gardens or a house plant and take a photo. Whatever you like. You could also join us on a local walk starting at the Red Lion! This will be on either 9th or 10th starting at 12.30.

We have Tony Cross as our March speaker – it shouldn’t happen to a therapist!  then Donna (a committee member and bank manager) will be talking about Scams and Internet safety in April.

Our first fundraiser is booked for Friday 25th March . Steve and Sue will be doing

a quiz. The evening starts at 7pm for 7.30 start. It is £10 a head which will include a gorgeous buffet. Don’t worry if you do not have a team , there will always be a team to join. It is going to be a really fun evening! Bring your own drinks! If your name isn’t on the list please call Marcelle or Angela.

We are visiting Chatham Synagogue on Friday 1st April, times etc to follow.

Other outings next year will include a visit to Downderry lavender nursery, Fort Amherst, and Pheasant Barn in Oare.

To celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee year we are having our Garden Party on Thursday 2nd June in Janice’s garden. We would love you to come in your finest garden party dresses or in Red White and Blue , crowns and tiaras optional!

There are a few nice outings being organized by the East Kent Federation. These include ;

A literary lunch on 7th April

Resolution meeting 11th April

Spring garden day 13th April

National Federation WI Annual Meeting 11th June

The details are on the Federation FB page or twitter. Any events that East Kent organize are best booked through us via Dilys. Please let us know if you need any further information.

Please call me  on  07729828959 if there is anything you want to know, about WI that is! Although I think I know about everything I am reliably informed that I don’t!!

Please remember it is ‘your’ WI , if you want to ask a question or have any ideas  please talk to me or one of the committee. We want you to feel included.

I hope you all appreciated the measures in place to keep you all safe. If we can just repeat for the next few months, sanitizing on entrance, report to me at the door for your subs then take a seat and stay at your table for the meeting, hopefully we can continue meeting and not have to cancel everything again. As I said the National WI suggest that all members do a LFT before meetings to ensure we are all safe. It goes without saying if you feel at all unwell before the meeting please stay away , that applies to me as well! We just want to keep you all safe at WI meetings .We will continue to wear masks until we have further advice.  It might be a good idea to bring a throw or pashmina next month as we will need to keep doors open! When it snows we might have to close them!!

I hope that you all enjoyed Jo Arnell last week. She is just so gorgeous and calming. Next year we will arrange a wreath making session for those of you that would like that. Things like this obviously come with a charge.

Those of us that went to the Plough yesterday had a really good time. It was so nice to be out with you all. Great variety in the M gifts, I think the most inventive gift was Kate’s musical biscuit box. Great fun.

The January meeting on the 6th will have George Ward the Cheesemaker of Kent! He will be bringing samples to taste.

The February meeting has Fancy Tat demonstrating their wares. This fits in with the environmental theme for our February meeting. Hello Ladies

I hope you are all enjoying this lovely weather, doesn’t it make a difference!

I hope you enjoyed Melanie’s talk on the murder and mayhem within the Belgian Royal Family , she is such a great speaker. I thought our Royals were bad!!

Next month will be our first group meeting for 15 months. I have missed seeing you all.

We will meet at Frinsted Village Hall at 7pm on Thursday 1st July.

As I asked before can you all bring a chair, your own drink and whatever you want to eat. It might be an idea to bring some warm clothes and an umbrella.

We will be having a raffle to raise some much needed money – please be generous. You will also need a pen as we will have a game or two of  bingo.

Lets all pray for a warm evening .

If you have any concerns regarding the meeting please talk to me . We want to see as many of you as possible.

As we do not yet know what Boris will decide about lifting all restrictions on the 21st we may still be restricted to 30 people outside so please let Marcelle or Angela know if you are coming to the party for numbers.

The lunch we had at the Plough was just lovely. We are organizing another lunch at the Red Lion on Saturday 14th August 1.00pm. If you would like to join us please let me know . I will probably get the menu so we can preorder to make it easier . Just text me on 07729828959 if you would like to come.

On 27th June 1.00- 5.00 Milstead Church are organizing an Open Gardens. There are 6 fabulous, rarely seen gardens open with teas at The Rectory. MwF WI are running the cake stall at the event to support the Church. Could you please let me know which cake you are making so we don’t have too many of the same. If you have trouble delivering it (them!) let me know and we will get it collected from you. Please support us , although we don’t all live in the village we are a part of it and once we start baking again it will feel as if life is getting back to normal!! I know you will not disappoint.

We are visiting Pheasant Barn in Oare which is opening on Tuesday 29th June 11-4pm as part of the Open Gardens. Can you let me know if you would like to come?

We are still thinking about resuming indoor meetings in September and would welcome your thoughts?

I expect by now we are all double jabbed but we must still take care and keep ourselves safe.

I cannot wait to see you all soon.

Hello Girls

We are all paid up now ladies, this year we have 41 members. Lots of WI’s are experiencing real problems, somehow, we seem to be coming through intact. Thank you all for sticking with us – things will get better.

The committee have met to discuss how we get back together in a safe fashion.

In the meanwhile, the zoom meetings continue.

May’s speaker is Dave Penny. He will be entertaining us with stories of his life as a pantomime dame. Dave has been involved in Amateur Dramatics for about 11 years and has acted in over 20 performances. He is also a playwright and has written an acclaimed play called ‘The Boys aren’t home’.

Please note the date change – we will meet on WEDNESDAY 12TH MAY at 7.30pm on zoom.

On June 3rd we have Melanie Gibson-Barton. She was booked in 2019 and is happy to join via zoom. She is a very professional speaker and some of you will know her already. This time she will be talking about the Belgian Royal Family.

The plan for the July meeting (as we speak) is a Garden Party at Frinsted Village

Hall outside on Thursday 1st July 7.00pm. We would ask you to bring your own chair and refreshments, if this is a problem just let me know. Obviously, this is not ideal, but we just want to keep you all as safe as possible. It will be so lovely to see each other again!

We are organizing an outdoor lunch on Saturday 22nd May (according to restrictions) at The Plough Lewson Street. Can you please let me know asap if you are coming as I will need to confirm the booking quickly? A text to 07729828959 would be best.

Another date for the diary is the Jazz at Torry Hill on 17th July. Tickets available which obviously need to be booked in advance.

On 27th June 1.00- 5.00 Milstead Church are organizing an Open Gardens. There are 6 fabulous, rarely seen gardens open with teas at The Rectory. MwF WI are running a cake stall at the event to support the Church. We will need cakes. Could you please let me know which cake you are making? Experience has taught me that we often get a glut of one type of cake, so advance notice of which cake you are making will help. Can you please confirm which cake asap? If you have trouble delivering it (them!) let me know and we will get it collected from you. Once we start baking again it will feel as if life is getting back to normal!! I know you will not disappoint.

At present we are thinking about resuming indoor meetings in September. Can you please let me know your thoughts?

Take care, keep safe and take your vaccine when you are offered it.

I cannot wait to see you all soon.

APRIL 2021 NEWSLETTER

Hello ladies.

It seemed like the right time for another newsletter; albeit short of news!

Thank you for all paying your subs to Dilys , that is all done now for another year. Let’s pray things are very different by then.

In the meanwhile the zoom meetings continue.

Last month’s speaker told us of stories from Scotland Yard, he was very interesting but also a little quietly spoken.

This month’s speaker was a superb speaker. Her name is Sian Fox and she is a home economist with lots of tales to tell. She has since been in contact with me with ideas for another talk if we are interested.

One advantage of zoom is that we can have a speaker from anywhere in the world! If you have any ideas for a meeting please let me know.

On Thursday 15th , this week, grab a cup of something at 3pm and join us for a chat. There is no topic just an informal natter.

Our next speaker will be a chap called Dave Penny. He will be entertaining us with stories of his life as a pantomime dame. Dave has been involved in Amateur Dramatics for about 11 years and has acted in over 20 performances. He is also a playwright and has written an acclaimed play called ‘The Boys aren’t home’.

There has been a slight date change – we will meet on WEDNESDAY 12TH MAY at 7.30pm. Please try and join us if you can. It would be lovely to see as many as possible.

In June we have Melanie Gibson-Barton. She was actually booked in 2019 and is happy to join via zoom. She is a very professional speaker and some of you will kn.ow her already. This time she will be talking about the Belgian Royal Family.

As I said last month we will take advice ,from National when we get it, regarding the commencement of meetings but obviously your views are essential.

We are hoping to be able to have some outdoor meetings , size depending on regulations, when the weather picks up, most likely at Frinsted Village Hall.

East Kent will be providing us with the EK News from June. We also have your membership books but haven’t decided how to get them to you. Once we are all vaccinated it will be easier.

I know you all join me in wishing HRH Queen Elizabeth our sincere condolences. The National WI has sent our sympathies to The Queen and there is a book of condolences online. Very sad time for her.

Take care, keep safe and take your vaccine when you are offered it.

I can’t wait to see you all soon.

March 2021 Newsletter

Hello ladies. I thought it was time that we sent out a newsletter as we finally have some news!

I hope those of you that have joined us at the January and February meetings have enjoyed it. In January we had Mary Smith from Maidstone Grammar School talking about the wartime tunnel they found in the school grounds. We have had her before but it was just as good listening to her again. At the February meeting we had Liza from SATEDA. She was very interesting and it was eye-opening, if not very sad to think about what some women have to endure.

This month we have a gentleman called Steve Roberts. His talk is entitled Tales of a Scotland Yard detective. He has been recommended on the Unofficial Womens Institute Facebook group. It should be interesting. I was unable to book the forensic scientist we had booked as he doesn’t like zoom. When we resume meetings I will definitely rebook him.

Next month on Thursday 1st April I have booked Laughing John!!! It’s not a joke! I thought about what we needed most of all and laughter came to mind. He will be teaching us Laughter Yoga, don’t miss it!

If you have any suggestions for zoom speakers just let me know. We will take advice from National when we get it regarding the commencement of meetings but obviously your views are essential.

We are hoping to be able to have some outdoor meetings , size depending on regulations, when the weather picks up, most likely at Frinsted Village Hall.

Thank you all for sending your membership money to Dilys. I know that you appreciate the decision made by your committee to waive our share of the subs this year. I have spoken to many other WI’s and not many have been able to do what we have. The way we saw it was that the money in the bank is your money. Money we have raised through subs and fund-raising. It will reduce our balance considerably but we know that we can replace it with some well attended fundraising later in the year. We are sorry to say goodbye to Faye and Vena but hope to welcome them back sometime. I know that Zoom is hard for some of you (well mostly me!) . If you would like to join in but are unsure please call me and we can help you. It is quite easy to join a meeting.

East Kent will be providing us with the EK News from June. We also have your membership books but haven’t decided how to get them to you. Once we are all vaccinated it will be easier.

I am only booking meetings via zoom two months at a time so we can change when it is safe. I will be arranging a walk soon, probably just around Faversham so we can get a coffee afterwards. If there is somewhere you think we would enjoy walking around please let me know.

Finally, I hope that you are all coping with these strange and frightening times. It has been hard but I am sure you have all kept yourselves busy, baked lots and have the cleanest houses ever. If you have done anything interesting or unusual please let me know. As HRH said we will meet again.

Love from Angela xx

MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER

Last month I started the newsletter by saying ‘What an inspiring woman’ but I think on a very different level Dianne Gallan was truly inspirational. To be able to deal with such a dreadful blow with such humanity and sense of humour takes a lot of courage. I am sure you all wish her well. I spoke with her after our meeting and she wanted me to thank you all for making her and Peter feel so welcome. She hopes that if any of us find ourselves in a similar position we will remember her and take some comfort from her.

On Tuesday 28th April there is a coach trip to Greenwich organised by East Kent Federation.  The details are in your East Kent magazine. To book onto this see Marcelle.

There is a quiz walk around Canterbury on Thursday 25th June 1.30pm for teams of up to 3, £8.50. Let Marcelle know if you are interested.

There are several trips on P10-11 of your East Kent news. Please see Marcelle to book onto any of them. These are always really well organised outings.

The East Kent Annual Council Meeting is on Wednesday 25th March at Folkestone. There are two very interesting speakers; Helen Sharman, the first British person in space and Colin Woolgar a counter terrorism security adviser for Kent.

The Annual Meeting of the National WI is at The Royal Albert Hall on Thursday 4th June. There are observer tickets available and a coach is organised.

Please put Saturday 4th July in your diaries. This is our annual Charity coffee morning at Frinsted. We will need cakes, plants, raffle and tombola prizes please. We also would love to see you there!

We have three fund raisers this year; a Quiz on Friday 27th March, a Wine Tasting on Friday 25th September and a bingo night with sausage and mash on Friday 23rd October. These are a fun way to raise money for your WI. There is a list for the quiz night to add your name to. You don’t need a team! Just let me know if you want to come to the quiz and are not on the list,

If you are interested in learning more about the Resolutions chosen this year there is a meeting at Chartham VH on Monday 20th April 10.00. The cost is £8.  The two being debated are Stem Cell donor registration and End Modern Slavery.

Our Centenary committee are busy organising our 100th year in 2022. We will have our Milstead w Frinsted Book launch on Saturday 13th November 2021 to start our 100th year. This should be a very interesting day with lots of archive material available to look through. It will be open to anybody. Lady Kingsdown has agreed to let us have a Garden Party at Torry Hill. This will be a wonderful day.

The yearly Group meeting takes place May 4th at Tunstall VH. The speaker will be Martyn Harrison singing Musical Mysteries.  You will need to take your own food and drink and set up the table that our WI is sitting on. I am away that day so won’t be attending but please call me if you are interested and want more information. The cost is £2.50 plus a raffle.

Next month’s meeting is on Thursday April 2nd at 7.30 pm. We will have Jack Deans a former New Scotland yard forensics expert! Should be good. Plus our new WI advisor is coming to the meeting.
