January 24 Newsletter

 

Hello ladies.

 

Wishing you all a very happy, healthy New Year.

We start the year with good news as Elaine Broad is finally home. I know you join me in sending her and the family all our love and best wishes.

 

Thank you all for your Foodbank donations last year. As you all know it is very needed and very appreciated by both New Leaf Support and Sittingbourne Foodbank.

 

The Christmas tree festival was lovely. Your tree really nice. Can you please put on your thinking caps and give us some suggestions for next years tree. We will hold a craft day/ evening in October to create the tree.

Your tags are on the table on Thursday to collect.

 

We are asking for nominations for the committee in advance of our Annual Meeting in March. Please let me know if you would like to join the committee or who you would like to nominate. We are a large group now and the committee would appreciate some new faces. Donna and Di are both standing down this year and I know you will join us in thanking them for all their hard work and commitment to the WI. Please give it  thought.

 

Next years subs are due by the end of March. They are £48. If you are paying by cheque can you please give to Dilys anytime up to the March meeting. Bank transfers can be done up to the middle of March. It makes life a lot easier for our treasurer and Federation treasurer if we are prompt.

Marcelle and I will be attending the EKFWI annual meeting in March. Please consider joining us this year  or next. It is such a good day , with great speakers. If you want any information please ask me. I drive there so there’s no worry’s about driving. It would be really nice if we had some company too.

 

This year we are visiting the Kent police museum in Faversham on Monday 29th April 2024 at 11am. We will have lunch afterwards for those interested. It is free but I will need numbers . If you are not at the meeting Thursday can you let me know if  want me to add your name to the list.

 

On the 18th June next year we are having a local WI coach trip to Ramsgate tunnels. This will be approx £25 for scone and tea ogle £28 for sandwich, scone and tea.  The list is now on the table. I need a £10 deposit at time of booking. There may be seats available on the coach for friends/ family but it’s WI first. We will be leaving at approx 10.30am returning approximately 4pm. Please come along if you’ve not visited the tunnels before. It will be a fabulous trip.

 

We are having a wine tasting fundraiser this year on Friday 11th October – not to be missed and

our quiz night will be on Friday April 12th at 7pm . Please support us in these fun evenings.

 

This years garden party in July will take place at Janice’s house again.

 

East Kent Federation events are open to all of us. These events are very well organised and so worth going to. I attend everything so you’ll always have a lift!

 

There’s a Show the Love Craft day on Monday 5th February at Federation office on Pean Hill. It is £8 a session ( am or pm). We are making green climate related crafts. It won’t be too hard but very rewarding. Let me know if you are interested.

 

The ever popular Spring day takes place on 10th April in Canterbury. There are three speakers with a flower and gardening theme. This year we have ‘the wonky parsnip lady’ and others. There are great stalls too. Well worth the ticket price.

 

There is a literary lunch on Wednesday 17th April in Lydden.

 

All the above three events are detailed on your East Kent Newsletter which you received last week.

 

The long standing association with the ACWW has now ended. East Kent Federation of WIs are now supporting local relevant charities for a year and are asking that we collect our loose change in the collection pots. This will be at the door for the next three months. It will be taken to the Annual meeting in March. This years charity is SNAPP. They are a brilliant charity helping children and families in Kent. Marcelle and I heard the founder talk last year and were very moved by the work that they are doing.

 

“ SNAAP’s priority is to provide the help you need when you need it the most and we focus upon the whole family and not just on the child with disabilities.

SNAAP was started in 2003 by a group of parents who wanted to make a difference and realised that they were not alone in feeling isolated and frustrated. With the help of Contact a Family, who carried out a consultation that highlighted a lack of support and information as well as limited leisure opportunities, SNAAP was born. Carrie Wood, is a manager and one of the founding members and helped make SNAAP the charity that it is today.”

December  23 Newsletter

 

Hello ladies

 

I hope you all enjoyed this months’ meeting. Very sorry I couldn’t be there. The committee and I wish you all a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year for another packed WI year.

The East Kent annual meeting takes place at Folkestone on March 19th 11-4. The tickets are £16 . If you’ve not been before I highly recommend going. There are two speakers, all the usual annual meeting bits and some interesting stalls. I will be driving so you can jump in with us.

November 23 Newsletter

 

Hello ladies

 

I’m so sorry we have had to cancel our meeting today. It’s a difficult decision to make but we had to follow advice, I know there are lots of trees down and no power in many of the villages. Better safe than sorry.

We will rebook Sandra as she is a fabulous speaker.

Last month a dozen of us did chakra dancing with a gorgeous lady called Nadine. We really loved it , dancing around the hall to rhythmic music. We were just glad no one was watching! Highly recommend her.

Our next event is our Birthday Party on Thursday 23rd November 7pm. If your name isn’t down can you please let me know asap.

Our Christmas meal is on Saturday 2nd December 1pm at The Plough, Lewson St.

I now have the menu. Can you please text / email me your choices asap please.

Two courses are £33 and three courses £39.

I will need a £10 deposit too.

If you can get a small photo ( no bigger the man 4” x 2”) to either a committee member or someone attending the coffee morning that would be great. If you can’t submit a photo you can let me know the wording you’d like on the tag and we will attach it to the tree for you.

This years WI carol service will take place on Monday 4th December at Rodmersham. It starts at 1.30. Can I have names please?

October 23 Newsletter
Hello ladies
Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday. Our speaker is a local lady, Hannah Farley Hills.
She has a theatre production company and she is a really interesting and inspiring.
If you are unable to attend don’t forget to let me know if you are coming to our Birthday Party on
Thursday 23rd November 7pm and/or the Christmas meal on Saturday 2nd December 1pm at The
Plough, Lewson St. We need a £10 deposit asap for the Christmas meal. I will have the price and
menu this week. For our party game can you purchase an item beginning with J that costs
approximately £5, wrap it and we will then have a lucky dip.

Newsletter

August 2023.

 

Flaming July seems a long time ago! That was a lovely garden party, thank you to everyone who came and did their bit. As for that hat game , all I can say is we know how to cheat!

 

This months’ coffee morning will be on Tuesday 15^th August 11am at Creek Creative, unless you would like to host it. Please let me know if you are coming as we have to have numbers to guarantee space for us, just a text will do.

 

The ever popular Tootsie Trot is back. For those who haven’t been before it’s a walk following clues around Faversham this time. It will be on Thursday 31^st August meeting at 6-15 for a 6.30 start. It takes a couple of hours. The walking won’t be too difficult and you are welcome to bring friends, family or husbands. There will be more details tomorrow night and there will be a list circulated tomorrow. This is a really fun evening.

 

The next Saturday lunch club is on 30^th September 1pm at the Red Lion. I will need names and £10 deposit please.

 

Our Bingo night takes place on Friday 15^th September, 7pm. This will be a fundraising event. The cost is just £10 which includes a ploughman supper. You are really welcome to bring lots of friends and family, you are also welcome to come along by yourself as there will be plenty of people to sit with. There will be a list next month but feel free to let me know your numbers by text or email.

 

November 23^rd will be our 101^st birthday party. We have a lovely singer entertaining us and there will be hot food prepared by the committee. This year we will be inviting local presidents as we have before.

 

I am currently trying to organize a workshop at Murston or at MVH where we will be decorating a tote bag for the Not in my Name campaign which asks men to act as ambassadors speaking out against violence towards women. These will be entered into the National competition. The details are in your WI life magazine.

 

The Christmas meal will on 2^nd December at the Plough, Lewson Street , we will have the letter game again. You need bring along a wrapped gift costing less than £5 beginning with the letter J ( for Jam and Jerusalem) which is put into a lucky dip.

Federation which are on the EK news digital newsletter.

Don’t forget to check out the East Kent FB page, all their events are on there. I also try to put them on our FB page Milstead with Frinsted Women’s Institute. If you are not a member of our group yet, please join it. It’s an easy way to keep up to date and informed. The public affairs committee at EKFWI are organizing some events around the Resolution for Clean Rivers. Possibly a tour around Stodmarsh Nature Reserve, I will have more details soon. They are also organizing something for WI day in September. Watch this space!

 

East Kent diaries for 2024 are now available for Dilys to order at £7 each. We need to order by 8/9/23.

A few of you already know about NK travel coach trips. They are a Sittingbourne-based coach trip company. We are thinking of using them as an option for coach trips, if you have any thoughts or fancy any of their trips can you let me know.

East Kent Federation are organizing their very popular craft day on Friday 6^th October. This is a great day which comes highly recommended .

 

 

The director of Sotheby’s , Jane Ramsay is giving a talk over zoom on the Jewels of the Duchess of Windsor. This will be on Wednesday 15^th November at 19.30. It is just £5 and bookable via ticketsource.

 

Rochester Cathedral is currently exhibiting some wonderful textile art. It is called Threads through Creation . Twelve huge silk panels made of 8m stitches. It is showing until 3^rd September. Admision is free. See www.creation-threads.co.uk for more details.

JULY 2023.

 

This month is our annual Garden Party – this year at Frinsted Village Hall 7pm start. There is parking off road but car sharing is advisable. If you can pick up a

few others on your way that will help. If you are passing Milstead Village Hall with an empty car please stop and collect a couple of ladies – just make sure they are WI members!

Don’t forget your glass, plate, cutlery, your small plate of food and a HAT! The committee look forward to seeing you all and a sunny evening!

The visit to Murston Heart was really popular and we were left inspired by the enormous task the Trustees had and still have. It’s a beautiful place and well worth a visit. Sioux Peto works there two days a week ( or more). She is a local artist and someone passionate about the local area. If you fancy going there with any other groups you are involved in I can give you her contact details. Sioux will be joining us in January to make hearts for ‘Show The Love’.

I will give you more details at the August meeting regarding the initiative between the Wildlife Trust and King Charles. It is being called the Coronation Gardens for Food and Nature and looks very interesting.

The WI is also part of a collaboration with The Rugby World Cup , I will give you more information next month. At present we are being asked to express an interest. If this is something you are keen to find out more about please let me know.

Great to see so many of you last night. I thought Dave Chisolm was a great speaker, always nice when we all take part.

 

Thanks to Eileen for the report from the Annual meeting in Cardiff. We had a really good time with all the other delegates from East Kent WI’s. I have attached my lengthy report if you are interested in reading it. The speakers were all so inspiring, it felt good to be a part of something so uplifting.

 

This month we will join Wormshill for their coffee morning on Tuesday 13^th June between 10-12. Can you still let me know if you are going, although the numbers aren’t so important this time. For those of you that aren’t sure where it is we can arrange car sharing.

 

Hopefully next month the coffee morning will be in Marcelle’s Garden.

The National Federation of WIs are collaborating with Together, a diverse collaboration chaired by Justin Welby. The idea is that we sing ‘thank you for being a friend’ in a choir/group on 2^nd July. Tony Christie is involved. If you are interested in finding out more let me know. www.thankyouday.org.uk

 

If you fancy going to the audition evening at Bobbing on 19^th June at 7pm, just £4, please let me know. This is where prospective speakers audition to go onto the official speaker list. Bit like X factor without Simon Cowell!

 

The East Kent Federation visit to Belmont House on 27^th July still has tickets available. They are priced at £25 which includes tours of house and gardens. If you want to go, please either book directly via ticket source or let Dilys know, and she will book it for you. So far we have three ladies going, Valerie, Teresa and Linda. Tracey is organizing a walk on Saturday 10^th June leaving Milstead VH at 11-00. It won’t be too hard, approx. an hour long. Please let Tracey or me know if you are going to join us.

 

Our annual Garden Party will take place on 6^th July at Frinsted Village Hall. Lifts will be available from Milstead Village Hall, or you can organize your own car sharing as parking is limited at Frinsted. The list for names and food went around last night and will be emailed to you all to add your name to if you weren’t at the meeting last night. Don’t forget to bring a hat!

 

Swale Friends of the Earth are holding a weekend event at the Alexander Centre Saturday 24^th – Sunday 25^th June. It promises to be a great event. I will be going to see if we can join forces with them to tie in with our resolution ‘Clean Rivers’.

This month’s coffee morning will be at 11.00 Thursday 18^th May at Rodmersham. Please let me know if you are coming for numbers.

The June coffee morning will be on June in Marcelles garden. We are going to join in with the Jo Cox day and ask you to donate to a very worthwhile cause.

 

There are several events and trips organized by the East Kent Federation which are on the EK news digital newsletter.

Don’t forget to check out the East Kent FB page, all their events are on there. I also try to put them on our FB page. IF you are not a member of our group yet, please join it. It’s an easy way to keep up to date and informed.

East Kent Federation have started to use www.ticketsource. Just put in East Kent Federation of WI’s. Obviously please let me know if you have booked independently so we can organize lifts.

 

The National Federation of WIs are collaborating with Together, a diverse collaboration chaired by Justin Welby. The idea is that we sing ‘thank you for being a friend’ in a choir/group on 2^nd July . Tony Christie is involved. If you are interested in finding out more let me know. www.thankyouday.org.uk

 

If you fancy going to the audition evening at Bobbing on 19^th June , just £4, please let me know. This is where prospective speakers audition to go onto the official speaker list. Bit like X factor without Simon Cowell!

The Folkstone Race for Life are desperate for volunteers , all roles from teas to back markers, if you are free on Sunday 11^th June and are interested ask me for more info.

 

Jay Blades is making another TV show meeting creative hobbyists and crafters. If you have a secret talent and are interested in applying I have the details.

 

There is a trip to Hatfield House on Tuesday 20^th June, croquet at Chartham Hatch on Friday 14^th July and a trip to Belmont House on 27^th July. We were going to organize a visit to Belmont this year so will join the Federation on this date instead.

 

 

In June I will be attending the Annual Meeting in Cardiff. If you would like to join this meeting online, please ask me for details. Lots of members are choosing to attend online and enjoy this. It’s a way of participating without the hassle.

 

 

The next Saturday lunch club will take place on Saturday 27^th May 1pm at Red lion . We would like a £10 deposit please, just put your name on the list on Thursday.

 

We are going to have a walk on Saturday 10^th June leaving the VH at 11-00. It won’t be too hard , approx. an hour long. Please let us know if you want to join us.

 

Our annual Garden Party will take place 6^th July at Frinsted Village Hall. Lifts will be available from Milstead Village hall , or you can organize your own car sharing as parking is limited at Frinsted. The list for names and food will be on the table at the meeting this week. Don’t forget to bring a hat !

 

Our birthday party will be on November 23^rd (just for your diaries)

The Christmas meal will be on 2^nd December.

 

A few of you already know about NK travel coach trips. They are a Sittingbourne based coach trip company. We are thinking of using them as an option for coach trips, if you have any thoughts or fancy any of their trips can you let me know.

NEWSLETTER

April 2023.

 

We welcome Claire, Tracey and Karen onto the committee. Thank you for caring and wanting to support us.

 

Last month was our annual meeting , if you would like to see our reports they will be on the table at Thursday’s meeting.

This month’s coffee morning will be at Bredgar light railway at 11.00 20^th April. Please let me know if you are coming for numbers.

Please note the change to the date for the visit to the Physic Garden to Friday 28^th at 11.00. This suits them better and the café will be open for us. If you want to join us please let me know or put your name on the list next month.

The food is freshly prepared to order, something like soup or curry type dish.

 

Spring Day at Canterbury will be on 12^th April 9.30 £12. This is a fabulous day in Canterbury with several top notch speakers, such as gardeners, florists etc.This sells out very quickly. If you want to go you can either book online yourself, which guarantees your place, or ask us to book for you. Please let me know if you are attending . I am driving there with Bev and Teresa so have another space if you want a lift.

There is a meeting in Canterbury on 19^th April to discuss the Clean Rivers resolution. This is a good chance to learn more about the chosen resolution before our vote in May. We will of course prepare a report from both meetings.

 

There is a trip to Hatfield House on Tuesday 20^th June, a bluebell walk at Challock on Wednesday 3^rd May, croquet at Chartham Hatch on Friday 14^th July and a trip to Belmont House on 27^th July. We were going to organize a visit to Belmont this year so will join the Federation on this date instead.

Our May meeting this year Thursday 11^th will be a discussion on the resolution then a Royal Coronation Tea to celebrate The King’s Coronation. We will need names on a list for catering numbers. Of course you may wish to wear crowns, red, white and blue or whatever you think is suitable for King Charles’ coronation.

This month we have Kent reptile and amphibian conservation group. They do brilliant work throughout Kent trying to conserve our dwindling wildlife.
