It was lovely to see so many of you last night. The last-minute speaker was really entertaining. Makes me think I have got quite a few ‘talks’ in me!

As I said last night, we no longer expect an apology from you if you can’t make the monthly meeting. It is a tradition that seems outdated, and it was never done in the past. Of course, you can if you want to!

The recent visits to Chatham Synagogue, Oare gardens and Downderry Lavender Nursery were really good. The Synagogue was so poorly attended but the garden and nursery had a nice turnout. I really would like some thoughts from you all regarding which trips you would like. The committee want to provide outings that you want. The monthly meetings are great fun, but we have so little time to get to know each other. One really important thing that the trips provide is an opportunity to talk with someone you might not necessarily talk to at a meeting. This is what makes the WI so important to me. If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Our actual 100th year will be celebrated with a meal on Thursday 24th November in our village hall. We have got a caterer arranged so we do not have to do the hard work on our special night. We really hope that you will all join us on this once in a lifetime event! Since you will be paying for the meal, we are not going to have our Christmas meal for this year only.

The cost is £30 per head, bring your own drink. There may be a little fizz too.

The menu is

Potted Ham Hock, pineapple chutney and sourdough

Or Brie, caramelized onion tartlet

Breast of chicken, pressed leek, and serrano Boulanger potatoes

Or Butternut squash, mushroom, and spinach wellington

Lemon Posset and shortbread.

If you have any dietary requirements, allergies etc. please let me know. We really hope that as many of you as possible can make it. It will be a lovely evening.

The list is going out next month if you could please let us know asap so I can finalize everything with the caterer. We can take cash or a cheque for the cost of the meal.

The Centenary Rose is doing very well outside the Village Hall, it magically moved to the left! Donna’s husband is very kindly making us a plaque to go on the wall marking our 100 years. He also made the banner on the railings by the hall. If you have any printing or signage needs etc., please get his number from Donna! Thank you both for all your support.

A date for your diaries is Friday 23rd September. Denise and her husband will be doing another wine tasting for our fundraising. The evening will start at 7pm. The cost is just £10 each. You do not need to know anything about wine (or even drink wine!) as it is just a bit of fun and a chance for a nice evening together. We will have a list out next month.

If you would like a WI diary for 2023, please let Dilys know. They cost £7.

Barbara has organized a Film Night for Friday 15th July 7.45pm £4.50 at the Avenue Theatre, Sittingbourne. The film is Operation Mincemeat, one film we missed earlier. Please let her know if you are going.

We will meet for coffee on Thursday 14th 1.30pm at Bredgar Farm Shop. Let me know if you would like to join me.

If there are any keen quizzers amongst us who fancy forming a quiz team for the East Kent quiz on Wednesday 21st September 1.15 for 1.45 start in Canterbury can you, please let me know.

There are several events and trips organized by the East Kent Federation which are on the EK news digital newsletter. They include a Quiz Walk around Canterbury next Thursday 14th 1.30pm or paddleboarding at Hythe 27th July 2-4pm. If you want to book these, please contact Marcelle or Dilys and we can book it for you.

Don’t forget to check out the East Kent FB page, all their events are on there. I also try to put them on our FB page. IF you are not a member of our group yet, please join it. It’s an easy way to keep up to date and informed.

Next month we have a speaker talking about ‘How to enjoy your driving’ – does he know about Operation Brock!!! I have no doubt it will be a very interesting talk. I hope to be on holiday so will miss it unfortunately.

The following month we have a talk about Queen Elizabeth II.

If anyone fancies a trip to the wartime tunnels at Maidstone Grammar School let me know and if enough of us want to go, we can arrange a date to suit.

Sending all our love to both Elaine and Jean who are both unable to attend at the moment – we miss you both.

I have also attached a copy of the report from the Annual Meeting in Liverpool last month. If you are interested in the resolution there is a lot of information on the National website. If there is anything you would like us to do to support this very important subject just let us know.

Please call me on 07729828959 if there is anything you want to know about WI Angela xx

Hello Girls

Well done, Donna, I think we are all a little bit more aware of some of the scams that are around and reassured that our banks are doing all they can to help us and prevent these awful people from taking what is not theirs! I think we must all keep vigilant and discuss it with someone if we are not sure if a call or email is genuine or not.

Next month, Thursday 2nd, will be a little different as it is our Garden Party to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee. This year it in Janice’s Garden, Rose Cottage, opposite the village hall. We start a little earlier at 7.00pm. You park as usual in the village hall car park. If you would like to wear red, white and blue, with or without a crown, that would be great. We are asking you to bring your own food and drink if you want. We know some people find it a little late to eat whilst others haven’t had their dinner by that time, so it is entirely up to you. There is a jubilee quiz and Jeff is providing music. Please try and come as it is lovely when we have a really good turnout.

OF course, before that, next Saturday 21st 2-4.30 we are having an afternoon tea at Torry Hill. All you need to bring is yourself, in a posh frock, or not! We have full access to the beautiful gardens so weather permitting it will be fantastic. All we ask is you bring any drink that you want and a CHAIR. There will be a glass of fizz as you arrive. This event is to celebrate 100 years of Milstead with Frinsted Women’s Institute. An incredible feat for a small village largely due to the hard work of many women over those years. At a time when lots of WI’s have been lost, we have managed to thrive. If you are not on the list, please let me know if you would like to come along.

The trip to Chatham Synagogue is 19th May at 6.30pm. We booked this following the recommendation of several other groups. If you would like to join us but haven’t put your name down, please let me know asap. There is a lift available if you need it. It is near to the little theatre in Rochester.

We are visiting a local garden in Oare on Thursday 30th June.

A few of us visited last year in torrential rain but this year we have been promised sun! We will meet at 10am at Pheasant Barn, Oare on June 30th. The visit costs £7. IF you need directions just follow one of us. Please can you let me know asap as the garden owner needs numbers. We may well have lunch afterwards if you fancy it.

We will be visiting Downderry Lavender Nursery, nr Hadlow on the 6th of July 11.00. the cost is just £7.50, lifts available. If you’ve not been before it is a fabulous place.

There is a Congratulations card available online to send your best wishes to the Queen. It is on our FB page – Milstead with Frinsted Women’s Institute. It is a private group so don’t be shy.

Hello Ladies

Thank you all for rejoining us this year. We are definitely not back fully yet, but we are getting there. All we need is a bit of sunshine and our summer events will be fabulous. Well done to our hostesses , I know it is a bit scary but you did brilliantly. For those of you that thought I was a bit quiet, I have lost my voice. Thanks to Marcelle for deciphering my random agenda and delivering it. I left early as it was too hard to not talk!!!

If there are any places you would like us to organize a trip to or just a restaurant that you fancy visiting just let one of the committee , as on your 2022 programme card, and we will arrange it. It is nice to know what kind of places you would like to visit etc.

Last month several of us went to the Annual Meeting of the East Kent federation. It really was a good meeting, with all the usual business plus Helen Sharman as guest speaker. Next years meeting will take place on 22nd March in Folkestone. It is from 10.30-3.30 and worth putting the day in your diary. It is a good day and a chance to get to know how WI really works. We always drive, so there is a lift available.

Our first fundraiser for three years was a great night, despite covid taking a few hostages! We raised £279.30 . Huge thanks to Steve and Sue as always. We don’t have a date yet, but we will have a wine tasting evening in September which shouldn’t be too taxing, but will definitely be a fantastic evening.

The Table Top sale raised a very respectable £152 despite very few people attending. Maybe just one of those days when we all had something else on. If you have any ideas for a fundraiser please let us know.

Our monthly (ish) coffee will take place at the Tea Room, Bredgar and Wormshill Railway at 11.30 on Wednesday 25th April. Please let me know if you are coming as I need to let them know, 07729828959.

We have a Felt Brooch Workshop in the VH on Tuesday 10th May 2.15. Please let Donna know if you want to come along. You will need an apron, towel, safety pin, needle and cotton.

To celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee year, we are having our Garden Party on Thursday 2nd June at 7pm in Janice’s Garden, Rose Cottage, opposite the village hall. We would love you to come in your finest garden party dresses or in Red White and Blue, crowns and tiaras optional! There will be prosecco, music and Janice’s beautiful garden. We have been promised a visit by the Queen too! Please let us know asap if your name isn’t on the list. For this year we ask that you bring your own food and any extra drink you want. It will be a lovely evening.

Milstead w Frinsted are celebrating their Centenary with an afternoon tea at Torry Hill on Saturday 21st May 2-4.30pm. We will be providing an afternoon tea and a glass of prosecco. Lady Kingsdown has kindly allowed us to use her gardens for this really special day. If you have looked at your Centenary book you will see that we started as Milstead with Kingsdown. Please let us know if your name isn’t on the list yet as we need numbers for catering.

Hello Ladies

Firstly, although Joyce isn’t officially 90 yet, I know you all join me in wishing her a wonderful month of celebrations. Happy 90th Birthday Joyce xxx

What a lovely turnout again. There is such a happy, friendly feel in the hall during our meetings. I hope you all feel welcome and included. We do try.  I am now self-analyzing myself and arguing with my dog, who is definitely in his RC ego mode – you had to be at the meeting to understand. He says it was the cat who emptied two sacks of bird food onto the kitchen floor???

Tony’s explanation of our ego voice and how we are affected by our various ego ‘moods’ was very interesting. Knowledge is power as they say.

Thank you so much for your kind donations tonight , we raised £121.50 which I will send off to Disasters Emergency Committee – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal

If anybody hasn’t managed to get their subs money to Dilys yet, please can you do it asap. Cheques are made payable to Milstead with Frinsted WI, and her address is 11 Shurland Avenue, Sittingbourne, ME10 4QT.

Hello Ladies

Happy New Year

I hope that those who could make it enjoyed the meeting last week. I was so pleased to hear about a local business promoting everything we have locally. I hadn’t realized they had a shop in Dargate too. It was lovely to see so many of you and great to visit another new lady, Carrie.

Thank you all for testing and sticking to the covid rules. Lots of other WI’s have made the decision not to restart after Christmas. I really do not want to do this and if we are all vigilant , stick to the rules , try not to move about too much at the meetings and let me know immediately if we experience any symptoms we can keep Milstead w Frinsted open!

I know a few of you cannot attend for work/personal reasons and I fully respect this. I wish we could offer hybrid meetings with zoom for those ladies but I am afraid we do not have WIFI at the village hall. We hope to be able to welcome you back soon.

The February meeting is on the 3rd. Janet and Claire from Fancy Tat will be demonstrating reusing items to make new things. This fits in with the environmental theme for our February meeting. Members all over the country will be making green hearts to symbolize love for the planet , there will be ideas in your WI magazine and on the WI website. Basically it is anything from a biscuit to fridge magnet that symbolizes our love for nature and our planet. We could plant something out in our gardens or a house plant and take a photo. Whatever you like. You could also join us on a local walk starting at the Red Lion! This will be on either 9th or 10th starting at 12.30.

We have Tony Cross as our March speaker – it shouldn’t happen to a therapist!  then Donna (a committee member and bank manager) will be talking about Scams and Internet safety in April.

Hello Ladies

Welcome to our two new visitors last week,  Sam and Jo. We all are so pleased to see you and hope that you felt welcome. We have been really blessed in the last few months to have 8 new ladies join us , we will get to learn your names! It is nice to have new faces. Please remember it is ‘your’ WI , if you want to ask a question or have any ideas  please talk to me or one of the committee. We want you to feel included.

I hope you all appreciated the measures in place to keep you all safe. If we can just repeat for the next few months, sanitizing on entrance, report to me at the door for your subs then take a seat and stay at your table for the meeting, hopefully we can continue meeting and not have to cancel everything again. As I said the National WI suggest that all members do a LFT before meetings to ensure we are all safe. It goes without saying if you feel at all unwell before the meeting please stay away , that applies to me as well! We just want to keep you all safe at WI meetings .We will continue to wear masks until we have further advice.  It might be a good idea to bring a throw or pashmina next month as we will need to keep doors open! When it snows we might have to close them!!

I hope that you all enjoyed Jo Arnell last week. She is just so gorgeous and calming. Next year we will arrange a wreath making session for those of you that would like that. Things like this obviously come with a charge.

Those of us that went to the Plough yesterday had a really good time. It was so nice to be out with you all. Great variety in the M gifts, I think the most inventive gift was Kate’s musical biscuit box. Great fun.

The January meeting on the 6th will have George Ward the Cheesemaker of Kent! He will be bringing samples to taste.

The February meeting has Fancy Tat demonstrating their wares. This fits in with the environmental theme for our February meeting. We will be making green hearts to symbolize our love of the planet , there will be ideas in your WI magazine and on the WI website. Basically it is anything from a biscuit to fridge magnet that symbolizes our love for nature and our planet.

The March meeting will now be Tony Cross – it shouldn’t happen to a therapist

!!!  then Donna will be talking about Scams and Internet safety in April.

Our first fundraiser is booked for Friday 25th March . Steve and Sue will be doing

a quiz. More details to follow. Don’t worry if you do not have a team , there will

always be a team to join. It is going to be a really fun evening! Bring your own drinks!

If you would really like to visit the Chatham Synagogue in April but aren’t available in the daytime please let me know and I will change it to an evening visit. 2

Other outings next year will include a visit to Downderry lavender nursery, Fort Amherst, and Pheasant Barn in Oare. There will be a Garden Party to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in June and we will be celebrating our own Centenary year too.

The Committee and I would like to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and look forward to a having a very Happy 2022 with you all.

Please call me  on  07729828959 if there is anything you want to know, about WI that is – I am not available for Christmas  lunch advice or last minute gift ideas!!
